“YIKES!!” Max screamed as he dodged the incoming flurry of mythologically-named alligator.  “Oh, THAT mission!”  He whipped out his gun and began firing at her.

However, that method of attack was fruitless; Medusa dodged every bullet, whipped out her own gun with the other hand, and shot the Luger.  With a loud CLANG! it flew out of Max’s hand all the way across the room.

“Uh oh.”  Max picked up the pace and began doing his best to dodge all the bullets and claws that came his way.  Sam!  Sam!  Sam!  What do I do?? he thought.

What’s going on?

Oh, nothing.  It’s just that SHE’S TRYING TO KILL ME!!

She?  You mean Medusa?  Are you running or fighting back?

Sam, I can’t get at the Luger; she shot it out of my hand and it looks like it fell into some grating on the other side of the room!

Then run.  And if she corners you, bite her, Max!

Worth a shot.  After a bit more running that did nothing to change the status quo, Max decided it was high time to change tactics.  He figured that if running scared wasn’t working, running amused would be a better choice.  It was an insane idea, but Max was insane to begin with.  “Hey, Medusa!  Is your gun broken or are you just a terrible aim?”  He began laughing maniacally as he dodged a fresh round of anger-tipped bullets.

“You little…!!”  She picked up the pace and began catching up with the lagomorph.

“Uh, yeah,” said Evan, peeking out into the hallway where Max and Medusa were now sprinting.  “While you’re doing that, I’ll just get my body out of the case.”

Max had a bit of a lead on Medusa, but it quickly vanished when he failed to see a small thick cable sticking out from one of the machines in the hall.  He quickly crashed to the floor, and Medusa was hovering over him in short order.  He barely had time to react before she’d flipped him over and shoved the cardio-extractor on top of his chest.

“Oh, HELL no!” he shrieked, mustering all his strength to try and kick her off.  He managed to shake off the box and slipped out of her grasp.  That was too close… he thought.

Please try to not die, Max, Sam said.

Shut up…

With a growl, Medusa got back up and began running after him.

Sam, I hope you don’t mind, but I think Medusa will be less likely to attack so hard if Evan’s in the room… something might happen to your body.

There was a few-second-long span of silence before Sam spoke up.  All right, Max; just don’t let me get too injured.  I’d prefer ‘not injured at all,’ but knowing you…

You know me all too well, Sam.

I think that’s what scares me the most.

Max made a quick U-Turn that surprised even Medusa and high-tailed it back to the room where Evan was.

“Back so soon, my muffin?” Evan cooed.  Then he realized that he was talking to the lagomorph.  “Oh.  You know, you can’t beat Medusa.  Better to just surrender to her.”

“Buddy, she’s already got one guy’s heart; she doesn’t need two!  Are you telling me that you’re okay with your girlfriend two-timing??”

Evan’s only response was laughter, which still resounded when Medusa barreled back into the room.

Suddenly, she stopped.  Max had adopted a martial arts pose, looking quite capable and ready to strike at a moment’s notice.  She huffed.  “So you want to fight me like that?”

Max jumped and bit Medusa on the head.  She screamed and flailed about, not paying attention to where she was going or whom she was about to crash into.

Both she and the completely blindsided Evan hit the floor, Max still chewing on her head, and the cardio-extractor now haphazardly on Sam’s body’s chest.  Max saw his opportunity and pushed the button on top with his foot.

“You…” Medusa wailed.  “What did you just do??”  With the major lagomorphic distraction, she could barely see, much less turn her head.  But the sound of her dreadful little machine at work told her something was wrong.  After a few more seconds of the stress of struggling and the thought of her boyfriend being harmed, she passed out.

Max lowered her head out of his mouth and took a look over his handiwork.  Sam’s body was once again lifeless, and Medusa was unconscious.  Overall, it seemed as though this plan had been at the very least somewhat successful.

Sam? he said.  It’s time to get you back where you belong.

Really?  Max, did you beat them?

You know me; always ready to hand out a Max-style beatdown.

I don’t remember it working this well.

Yeah, yeah, whatever.  Let’s just put you back.  Max walked behind the pipes where he’d hid the backpack, took Sam out of his hiding place, and placed the jar on the floor next to the unconscious pile of friend and foe.  He pushed the cardio-extractor off Sam’s chest with his foot and smirked as it hit the ground with a resounding thud.  Ready?

I couldn’t be any more ready if I wanted to, Max.

He looked over at Sam’s body; due to the fact that his clothing hadn’t been moved out of the way, there was now a considerably-sized incision in Sam’s shirt.  Regardless, he’d still need to unbutton it.  He carefully undid the two buttons above Sam’s chest, pushed the sides of his shirt apart, and then gingerly reached his paw into the jar.  He’d forgotten about the extra electricity and received another nasty shock, this one making his own heart jump ferociously.

You all right, little buddy??  I just felt a lot of electricity leave the jar! Sam asked.

Max panted, still reeling from the jolt and the sudden surprise of it.  I’ll… I’ll be fine.  Just let me scrape myself off the ceiling and then I’ll continue putting you back.

Sorry.

Steeling himself, Max reached in and received another shock.

Sorry again, little buddy.

Max was extremely irritated.  Okay, could you just shut up so I can move you without getting zapped again??

After looking around for a bit, Max spotted some electrical cables.  He put the plug end into the liquid, which quickly discharged any extra electricity.  Tossing away the cable, he steeled himself once more, but thankfully didn’t receive a shock for his troubles this time.  He carefully picked up Sam’s heart and, lifting the flap of skin like last time, gently laid it in its rightful place.

In a mirror of the earlier scene, Max stood back and watched as Sam’s body twitched, crackling slightly with electricity.  A few moments later found Sam panting.

“Sam?” Max asked, bouncing on the balls of his feet.

Sam’s eyelids scrunched and he sat up, stretching a bit.  He yawned as he twisted, and once that was taken care of, he turned to Max.

“Good job, little buddy.”

“SAM!!” Max shouted, grinning madly.  But his grin soon turned to a frown.  “Don’t you ever scare me like that again, you hear?  I nearly had a coronary when I saw your heart was missing.”

Sam smirked.  “Wow, I didn’t realize you cared that much, Max.”

“It’s not that, Sam; it’s just that I figured I’m probably going to be the death of you.”

“Don’t say that, Max.  You’re the closest thing I have to a brother.”

“Then why don’t you—ugh, never mind the movie parodies, let’s just get the…”

Max’s voice trailed when he and Sam heard a loud, unfamiliar BOOM coming from the upper levels of the prison.

“…Max?”

“Yeah?”

“What do you suppose that was?”

It didn’t take much longer for his question to receive an answer; soon enough, a large, round, metal object came crashing through the ceiling, creating a substantial impact crater in the floor.  When the dust cleared, it was all the more obvious as to what this agent of destruction was.

“Sam!  It’s… it’s the manhole covers!  Wow, they sure took their sweet time.”

“I’m going to finish your earlier statement, Max: ‘Let’s just get the hell outta here!”  He ran over, picked up Max, and grabbed the walky-talky out of the jar.

“Couldn’t have said it better myself, Sam!  But are you okay running and carrying me?”  Max thought for a moment.  “And buying me a frosty dessert later??”

Sam shrugged.  “Can’t think of a reason not to.  Besides, even with all your selfish and hedonistic demands for desserts, what better time to test out my body again than now?”

“Point.”
Aaaaand he's back! :3 Here's a long update to try and make up for the lack of updates for the next two weeks or so... probably won't be, but thank you for your patience, everyone.

Great to have Sam back in his own body! I missed his voice coming from his chubby puppy body!
